30 poems in 30 days: Day 16

May 15, 2010

Here’s what I’m looking forward to
Watching the leftover light that slides
Slowly past Jupiter and Saturn.
Fossils from that time we made
Omelets from leftovers sit sternly.
To hearing the sizzle of something
On some sort of
(what I can only imagine will be fledgling)
Fire, big skillet, and sunrise and some moving water.
There are fossils of that time we sat
On various benches of a campus
That may have never really wanted our
Soles in it’s soil.
Are there arrowheads in those dunes?
I hope to taste cinnamon over
Salt and sand in the air.
Those fossils we let litter Michigan,
We’ll strew them higher soon,
Into fingers and nails,
In to life lines and heart lines
And those places we used to
To press together.
